How To Write A Beautiful Love Poem For Someone Special
1. Don't be Embarrassed.
If you have not written a poem before you may be anxious about what to write and how to write it. You may also feel silly and wonder what your friends may think. These thoughts are all natural to begin with. The way to get through it is to focus on the person you are writing it for and what they mean to you. Think about their reaction to your poem. The likelihood is that they will love the poem however it is written as it has come from you. If they know it is not something you would usually do then they are likely to find it an even bigger romantic gesture.
2. Make The Poem Authentic
Don't try and copy other people's styles or sentiments. Write about your own feelings in your own words. The more real and individual it sounds then the more special it will be to your loved one.
3. Subject Matter
The most obvious subject is to write about what you find most attractive about your loved one and the way they make you feel. However, if you are a more experienced poet you may want to compare your loved one to beautiful landscapes or anything else you feel they may appreciate. One of my love poems called 'The Wonder of My Life' compares the love of my life to the wonders of the world.

5. Include The Senses
Include as many of the senses as possible into the poem. Including sight, smell, touch, taste and sight makes the poem more tangible and relatable. It may also evoke special memories between the two of you.
6. Try To Avoid Cliches
Try to avoid clichés and phrases that have been used so often that they have now lost their meaning. Examples are 'Your love is like a red, red rose.' or 'All You Need Is Love.' Try to come up with your own phrases and images if possible. If this proves too difficult then the odd cliché should be fine as long as it seems authentic, and is a phrase that you would generally use. If there is one or more common love phrase that you both use then this can be used as this is meaningful to the two of you.
7. Proofread and Redraft
If you are presenting the poem to your loved one then it is best to proofread first and correct any spelling and/or grammatical errors before giving it to them. It is also best to come back to your 'finished' poem 24-48 hours after your first draft. You may see something in it you feel could be improved. If you are going to perform it to your loved one then it is probably best to have at least one practice beforehand.
8. Don't Be A Perfectionist
Don't worry about creating the perfect poem. Even most established poets are still striving for that elusive 'Perfect Poem'. If the poem has been written from the heart and is authentic and thoughtful then it is highly likely that the poem will be loved and appreciated.
